What a professional setup looks like
What room, desk and computer you need, how the studio is installed, and what living with a fixed setup at your desk actually involves.
What the system is, and who’s behind it
Five questions
What’s included in the Premium Desktop Studio package?
It includes an installed, tested desktop studio with professional lighting, camera, microphone and teleprompter. Everything is configured before shipping so it works immediately once set up. The system is designed so it’s not just about the gear. Clients are supported with a structured system and ongoing coaching so they actually use it. The focus is on building rhythm, workflows and confidence, not leaving someone alone with equipment and good intentions.
What makes a desktop studio different from other video options?
The Desktop Studio lives at your desk and is always available. You can record unlimited videos, go live, or jump on calls instantly. It removes reliance on external teams and is supported by coaching, mentorship, and direct feedback.
Is the Desktop Studio suitable for live presentations as well as recordings?
Yes. The Desktop Studio is designed for both live switching during presentations and high-quality recordings.
Who gets the best results from a desktop video studio?
The people who get the best results are those who have already felt the pain of slow videographers, inconsistent DIY setups or years of recording without momentum. They are ready to commit, show up consistently and use a system rather than relying on motivation alone.

Choosing the room
Six questions
Does the studio need its own room?
Yes. A dedicated room often works well, especially if multiple people will use the system or if your main desk setup cannot be modified. If it’s just you, skip the separate room, keep it at your desk. No scheduling, no walking to another room, no plugging and unplugging a laptop. It’s already set up right where you work: hit the switch and you’re recording.
Should I put the Desktop Studio at home or in the office?
Desktop Studio should be placed where you’ll realistically use it most often. If your office is a quiet room with controllable light and minimal interruptions, that’s perfect. The setup is designed to stay fixed in one location, wherever you can achieve the most control and consistency. If multiple people are using it, then a dedicated, quiet room on a sit-stand desk is preferred as the setup is designed to stay fixed in one location.
Can I set up a video studio in a small room?
Yes. The Desktop Studio is designed for compact spaces and attaches directly to the desk. A controlled room with minimal natural light variation works well, even in small apartments.
What room size do I need for a desktop studio?
A comfortable room size for the Desktop Studio is around 3 x 3 metres, which gives you enough space to frame properly, control lighting, and move comfortably without feeling boxed in. That said, we’ve installed the system in spaces as small as 1.2 metres wide. It’s tight, and it makes installation more challenging, but it is absolutely doable.
Can I record in a bright room with glass walls?
Only if natural light can be controlled. High volumes of uncontrolled daylight will wash out the image and reduce consistency. Blinds are strongly recommended so the room can switch into “recording mode” by blocking daylight and relying solely on studio lighting.
Is it better to rent a studio than set one up?
Not a rented one. A podcast-style studio gets the job done, technically: you show up, someone else runs the gear, you walk away with footage. The trade-off is you’re renting their schedule, and the people running the room aren’t the ones who know your message, your brand, or whether any of it actually gets published afterwards. A fixed setup solves the real problem. It’s not about decking out a studio, it’s about having something ready every time you need it, backed by coaching that ties what you record to what you’re actually trying to say.
The desk it sits on
Seven questionsDoes my desk need to be sturdy?
Yes. Lightweight desks can introduce wobble, which is amplified through the camera lens. A stable desk reduces vibration and improves visual quality.
Does the desk need to be set up before the equipment arrives?
Yes. The desk must be assembled and ready before installation so the system can be mounted correctly.
Can the Desktop Studio be installed on a sit-stand desk?
Yes. The system clamps onto dedicated sit-stand desks without issue and is designed to work with common office furniture.
Do I need a sit-stand desk?
A sit-stand desk is recommended. It provides flexibility for sitting or standing recordings and allows different users to adjust height and framing without touching the video equipment.
Why is a sit-stand desk recommended when a team shares the studio?
A sit-stand desk is recommended, especially for shared studios. It allows different users of varying heights to adjust framing simply by raising or lowering the desk, without touching the camera or lighting. This keeps the setup fast, consistent, and tamper-free.
Will the Desktop Studio work on a manual or temporary standing desk?
No, temporary or manual desks are not ideal. They can limit height adjustment, cause clearance issues with clamps, and may not support the weight or stability required.
Do I need to buy a new desk?
Not necessarily. Many standard sit-stand desks work fine as long as they’re stable and can handle the weight.
Connecting it to your computer
Seven questions
What cables do I need to connect the Desktop Studio to my computer?
Just two cables. One HDMI/(USB-C) cable connects the teleprompter to your computer. One (USB-C) cable connects the camera and microphone. If your laptop only has USB-3 ports, we include the adapter. Plug them in once.
Does the Desktop Studio really turn on with one button?
Yes. The entire video setup runs on a single power circuit. Camera, teleprompter, audio, front lights, and background lighting all switch on and off together with one button.
Is it better to use a dedicated computer with the Desktop Studio?
Yes. A dedicated computer that stays plugged in is recommended. This allows for faster recording with fewer setup steps and avoids issues caused by shared devices or security restrictions.
What laptop do I need for the Desktop Studio?
There is no strict specification. The recommendation is to use a laptop that is no older than five years. Any modern, reliable laptop will run the system effectively.
Does the Desktop Studio work with multiple monitors?
Yes. You can position your monitors either side of the teleprompter or both on one side. The key is keeping the screens as close to the teleprompter and camera as possible. That way, when you glance between screens, there’s only a slight turn of the head rather than a noticeable shift in your eye line, keeping you visually connected to the camera. Monitor arms are strongly recommended.
Does the Desktop Studio require software or firmware updates?
No. The Desktop Studio is hardware-based and does not require ongoing software or firmware updates. Any updates would relate to the computer, not the video equipment.
Does the Desktop Studio include software?
No. The offering is a complete desktop video studio hardware system. It’s a single, integrated solution rather than individual components or software subscriptions. We will recommend appropriate software for your computer to purchase yourself.
Why it’s built the way it is
Five questionsWhy does the Desktop Studio avoid batteries, Bluetooth, and wireless technology?
Anything that adds friction becomes a barrier. Wired, powered systems are reliable and always ready to record.
Can I easily swap the camera if something better comes out later?
No. The Desktop Studio is designed as a supported, standardised setup. Integrating third-party upgrades isn’t supported.
Why can’t I upgrade the camera myself?
Supporting hundreds of systems requires standardisation. Custom gear introduces complexity, warranty and support issues.
Will the camera become outdated quickly?
No. Camera image quality hasn’t made major leaps in years. Computers will need upgrading before cameras do.
Can I move the Desktop Studio to another room after installation?
No. The video studio is designed to remain fixed once installed. Moving it introduces technical variables that affect lighting, framing, and consistency.
How the studio arrives
Two questionsIs the equipment flat-packed or pre-assembled?
It’s partially disassembled for shipping but fully configured and tested beforehand. Core components are already built and calibrated in our Sydney-based assembly line. Setup mainly involves mounting, positioning, and cable management.
How heavy is the Desktop Studio?
The full Premium Desktop Studio weighs approximately 15 kilograms. Additional upgrades add to this but are lightweight.
Installation, start to finish
Seven questions
Is there a site visit before installation?
No in-person visit is required. A virtual fact-find process is used instead. Clients submit photos, videos, and measurements of the room, desk, windows, and lighting. A video report is then provided for review and approval before the system is built and scheduled for installation.
What happens before installation?
A fact-find is completed to confirm room size, desk setup, blinds, computer details, and layout. This ensures everything is planned properly so installation runs smoothly.
Do I need to sort out blinds and layout before installation?
No. The fact-find process gathers the required information first. Recommendations are then made based on the actual space.
What is your availability for installation, can you specify a day?
Yes. Our project manager will schedule a weekday that suits you once the equipment is ready to be installed.
Do you need to access our loading dock?
In Sydney city, usually yes. We’ll be delivering in a Ridge Films branded Tesla Model 3. We just need enough space to unload safely, then we’ll shift if needed.
How long does an on-site studio installation and training take?
Installation and training typically take around two to two and a half hours. By the end of that session, the studio setup is complete, the computer is connected, the teleprompter is working and the client has recorded their first video.
Does someone need to be on site to install the Desktop Studio?
Usually yes. If you have time, setup is possible using guided video calls and setup videos. The system is pre-configured, so installation is mostly physical positioning and cable management. However, we recommend you save the hassle of learning to do this by using our qualified technicians to perfect the system so it’s ready for use.
What you can add to the studio later
Three questions
What upgrades are available for the Desktop Studio?
Upgrades can include multiple cameras, video switcher, podcasting, editing and background options. The system is modular and can grow as your confidence and output increase.
How do I know if I need an upgrade?
The standard Desktop Studio configuration is sufficient for most solo video content, webinars, online presentations, and regular publishing. An upgrade may be appropriate if your workflow involves in-person interviews, multi-camera production, podcast recording, or more complex production requirements.
Where can I see the Desktop Studio upgrades?
Information and examples of available upgrades can be viewed on the Studio Upgrades page. An overview video demonstrating upgrade functionality is also available.
Deciding whether to go ahead
Two questionsIs it normal to feel hesitant before committing?
Yes. It’s common when stepping into something new. Support is designed to guide you through both the technical and confidence challenges.
What happens if I need time to think about it?
That’s fine. You can take a few days to review everything and come back with a decision once you’re comfortable.
Booking a call and what happens next
Five questions
What happens after I book a time?
Your booking is provisional. Before the session, you’ll receive a small number of pre-qualifying questions so the conversation is productive and focused. The team will also confirm the appointment ahead of schedule to ensure alignment before the call proceeds.
What is covered during the 30-minute discovery session?
The session is practical and focused. Your current setup, environment, and objectives are discussed, and the system is demonstrated so you can see how it would work in your situation. If there’s alignment, the next steps are clearly outlined.
What happens if I decide to move forward?
A formal proposal is issued along with a follow-up appointment. To proceed, a signed proposal and full payment are required. From there, a detailed fact-find is completed, your space is assessed via video review, the studio setup is assembled and fully component-tested, then packed and scheduled for installation.
Can I demo the Desktop Studio before I buy?
Yes. You can book a scheduled demonstration at our Marrickville studio in Sydney. During the demo, you’ll see exactly how the Desktop Studio works, how quickly it powers on, how the camera, lighting and teleprompter integrate, and how simple the workflow actually is. This isn’t a flashy showroom pitch. It’s a practical walk-through so you can experience the system in real time and ask specific questions about your space and setup.
How long does the Desktop Studio take to arrive?
Once paperwork, payment and fact-find details are completed, equipment can be shipped within days, with delivery typically taking about a week depending on location.
Not sure whether your room and desk will actually work?
Send through your space and Chris will tell you what needs to change before anything is ordered, not after it arrives.
