No Camera Signal From Your Switcher? How to Fix It

If your camera has disappeared from your computer and you have the Switcher Upgrade, restart the Desktop Studio and check that input 2 is lit on the switcher. Input 2 is your camera. Then make sure the camera cable is in port 2, the HDMI out cable is firm, and the converter running to your computer is plugged in.

Key takeaways

  • On a Desktop Studio with the Switcher Upgrade, the camera always runs through input 2 on the switcher.
  • Input 1 is kept free for a laptop, iPad or iPhone, so a camera cable in port 1 shows no camera picture.
  • If the switcher looks different from normal, power the Desktop Studio off and on again, and press nothing else.
  • The HDMI out cable runs to a small HDMI-to-USB converter, and a loose plug there cuts the picture to your computer.

What does "no camera signal" look like on a switcher studio?

You open Zoom, Teams or your recording app and the camera picture is black or missing from the list of cameras. The camera itself may look fine, with its light on. The problem sits somewhere between the camera and your computer, and on a studio with a switcher there are three places it usually goes wrong: the wrong input is selected, a cable has moved to the wrong port, or a plug has worked loose behind the desk.

When your Desktop Studio powers on normally, the switcher lights up number 2, and the audio for number 2, by itself. We program it that way, so the camera and microphone are ready every time you sit down. If what you see on the switcher today looks different, start with step 1.

How do you get the camera signal back?

Work through these in order, and stop when the picture comes back.

  1. Restart the Desktop Studio and check input 2. Power the Desktop Studio off and back on. When it starts up, number 2 and its audio should be lit on the switcher. If they are, the switcher is in its normal state. Don't press any of the other buttons on the switcher to try to fix it, because that is usually how it ends up in the wrong state.
  2. Check the camera cable is in port 2. Look behind the switcher. The HDMI cable coming straight from the Desktop Studio camera should be plugged into port 2, not port 1. Port 1 is the data channel for an external laptop, iPad, iPhone or desktop you present from. If the camera cable has been moved into port 1, move it back to 2.
  3. Check the HDMI out cable. The HDMI out port on the switcher is what sends your picture to the computer, so you can see and record everything. Make sure that cable is pushed in firmly at the switcher end.
  4. Follow the HDMI out cable to the converter. Trace that HDMI out cable to the small converter that turns the HDMI signal into USB for your computer. It may be wrapped or tucked out of sight under the desk. Check both plugs are secure and that the USB end is still connected to your computer.
  5. Recorder switcher only: check the USB out. If you upgraded to the recorder switcher, the USB out port runs to the solid-state recorder. Make sure that cable is connected too.

What if the switcher looks right and there is still no picture?

Then the problem may be the camera itself. Check that it has power and that its own HDMI cable is firm, using the guide to fix a camera that won't show up. If your switcher has been replaced or reset, it may also need its default settings saved again: here is how to program your ATEM Mini startup state.

If you have worked through all of this and the camera still isn't coming through, get in touch and we will help you find it. For the bigger picture of how the studio fits together, see what the Desktop Studio setup involves.

Switcher signal questions we get asked

Why does my switcher show no camera picture?

Usually because the switcher is not on input 2, the camera cable has been moved out of port 2, or the HDMI out cable or its converter has come loose. Restarting the Desktop Studio puts the switcher back on input 2, and then it is a matter of checking those cables.

Which switcher input should my camera be plugged into?

Input 2. On a Desktop Studio the camera is programmed to come through on input 2, and input 1 is kept for a laptop, iPad, iPhone or desktop you want to present from.

What is the small converter on my switcher cable?

It turns the HDMI signal coming out of the switcher into USB, so your computer can read it as a camera. It is often wrapped or hidden under the desk, so it is easy to miss when a plug works loose.

Should I press the buttons on the switcher to fix it?

No. Restart the Desktop Studio instead. It is programmed to start up in the right state every time, and pressing other buttons is the most common way it ends up showing the wrong thing.
